The one thing that stuck with me after Shannon’s discussion with our class on Thursday is that in her area, and her field of work, there are only three recovery houses they accept people that are on medicated assisted recovery. I found this to be surprising, and flat-out disappointing. Someone should not be denied a bed just because they are on medication-assisted recovery.
This idea exemplifies the stigma around medicated assisted recovery. While Shannon mentioned how some people may be drowsy or sedated while using this medication, it does not mean the drug itself is the direct cause. Shannon offered a myriad of other explanations as to why that person may be falling asleep in a coffee shop or fast food restaurant. Unfortunately, until this stigma is solved, the problem of finding recovery houses for people on medication-assisted recovery will not go away anytime soon.
