David Fialko of the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania spoke to our class on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. Prior to giving a Narcan training in class, he spoke about the science behind opioids, such as how different opioids affect the brain. Fialko brought two doses of Narcan to class that were passed around for classmates to get a look at.

Narcan is very easy to administer, he said, you just have to spray the dose up the person’s nose. However, he told our class some things that should be done before giving someone Narcan, which include: loudly state “sir” or “ma’am” and give them a shake, check their pulse and breathing, call 911 and then administer the Narcan. Also, he said that you should loudly say to the person that you’re about to give them Narcan before you actually do because sometimes even the word Narcan will get that person out of the haze they’re in. Having Fialko come in and give us this Narcan training was helpful because although how to administer Narcan is rather self explanatory, I personally didn’t know to do any of the steps he mentioned that lead up to actually administering the Narcan.
