Brooke Feldman and Evan Figueroa-Vargas, who are both in long-term recovery, spoke to our class about the intersection between social justice, race and recovery.
Figueroa-Vargas, who works with the organization Mental Health Partnerships, is Latino and discussed pushing for public health resources for Spanish-speaking Philadelphia residents. He has been in recovery since 2011.
Feldman is 90 days away from completing a master’s in social work at the University of Pennsylvania and will celebrate her 13th anniversary of sobriety in July. She encouraged journalists to amplify the voices of people of color in their coverage of recovery.
“Don’t reach out to me, reach out to Evan,” said Feldman, who is white.
