Aubrey Whelan of The Philadelphia Inquirer came to speak to the class on Thursday, February 7.
I thought it was a really good lecture. She touched on some of what we’ve talked about before — especially the problems facing South Philly. It was encouraging to listen to her because she provided actual examples of what she was doing. She talked about what was working and what hadn’t worked in the past.
More importantly, she made sure to emphasize that Kensington isn’t a war zone like some misguided news articles claim. It’s a neighborhood of people, a community. She drove home how important it is to humanize these people because other forms of news media are dehumanizing them. She spoke on how important it is to listen, to just listen and let them speak.
