Andrea Wenzel, who spoke to our class on Jan. 30, is an assistant professor of journalism at Temple and a research fellow at Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism.

She discussed solutions journalism and community engagement and said the two are as compatible as “peanut butter and jelly.” Wenzel also talked about her past experience with community engagement projects and tools newsrooms have utilized, like Hearken, that allow reporters to hear audience’s questions earlier in the reporting.

Our students asked questions about continuing community engagement after projects are published, how a partnership with a community organization can strengthen a newsroom’s reporting and the incorporation of news literacy into community engagement.
