David Fialko, a certified prevention specialist from the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, came into our class today to teach us not just how to administer naloxone — brand name, Narcan — with a nasal spray, but also how it works. When someone is overdosing, an administration of Narcan knocks opiates out of their receptors.

One of the things that Fialko talked about that I hadn’t realized was the relative effect of opiates compared to other natural functions that “produce a high.” Opiates and other substances produce highs that are astronomical compared to the ones our bodies create on their own. I knew it was more powerful, but I never appreciated how much more powerful it was.
