In the article published by the Columbia Journalism Review, author Jillian Bauer-Reese reported that Philadelphia has suffered a high number of overdose deaths in the past recent years. Multiple journalists, local and from around the nation, have been reporting on the scene. Sometimes it is inevitable to witness a person overdosing and as journalists, we have to make a choice whether to carry Narcan or not in order to potentially save a person’s life.
I personally believe that at that moment, saving a life becomes bigger than a story. As long as one is safe and isn’t putting their own lives in danger, a person should intervene in a situation if it means decreasing the number of overdose deaths. As a matter of fact, carrying Narcan should go beyond journalists and locals. People who use public transportation should consider carrying it too.
