On Tuesday, Fred Way, the Executive Director at the Pennsylvania Alliance of Recovery Residences, came to speak to us. Way gave an incredibly detailed presentation on how recovery residences become PARR certified, and explained the process of opening a recovery residence.

Previously, I had very little knowledge of the process of opening a recovery house. There is a recovery house nearby my family’s home in the suburbs, and this presentation allowed a better understanding of what it might be like to run the house. It was sad, but unsurprising, to discover how difficult it is for those interested in opening a recovery house to gain community support. NIMBY is such an interesting, confusing concept. The same people who claim to care (or even complain about) the opioid and overdose problem in Philadelphia reject supports coming to their community. But, with leaders like Fred Way comes an increase in community support and understanding.
