It was really refreshing for Dr. Joseph D’Orazio to begin his presentation by discussing person-first language. We’ve had a lot of policy experts and advocates speak to our class who understand the need for using those terms because of their fields. But for D’Orazio to have that mindset too must be great for his patients and Temple University Hospital.
It was also really impactful for Dr. D’Orazio to show an example of a patient with diabetes and then a patient with substance use disorder having similar symptoms. I like that he mentioned that doctors should treat both chronic medical disorders with the same attitude. I think his discussion about fentanyl myths really connected with the class, a lot of us had something to say about it. I was shocked by the news articles he showed that continue those myths.
