Stacie Leap, Jeff Shair, Frank Dietrick and Sterling Johnson from Mental Health Partnerships visited our class to discuss their stories of personal recovery.
They also discussed the media’s coverage of mental health, especially regarding mass shootings — like the one that left 17 dead at a high school in Florida on Wednesday. Johnson said mental health issues and a predisposition to violence are often linked to each other when people discuss possible preventative measures, but that tie is unfounded.
The group also touched on having a mental health illness and addiction as co-occurring disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 7.9 million adults in the United States had co-occurring disorders in 2014.
