Jon Orens, a real estate investor in Philadelphia, lost his son Danny to addiction in 2017. Danny fought with addiction for 11 years and was in and out of recovery. After Danny’s death, Jon became an activist for people with addiction and in recovery.

I think Jon brought up a really important point about addiction, recovery and relapse. It’s hard to wrap your head around how often someone can relapse while in recovery. He also pointed out the shame that can accompany relapse — mostly because of the stigma that surrounds addiction in the first place and how it’s often seen as a moral issue and not as a disease. I think it would be really interesting to find a way to illustrate how common relapse is in some sort of graphic way — almost like visualizing a wave because the water feeds back into itself to keep the wave moving. But I’m not sure where in the project that would fit.
