Social justice is one of the biggest issues we face as a nation. It has captivated the nation, politicians, and even athletes, as we have seen in the NFL. Yesterday, I learned how much race impacts people in recovery, struggling with an addiction, and those trying to get into recovery.
As Evan discussed, he attempted to get into a recovery house seven times in a month and was turned away each time. It is hard not to think that circumstances would have been different if he were a white male.
Brooke’s discussion about how police often simply told her to go home when she was stopped was also interesting. As she said, if the same happened to Evan, he would probably not have been sent home, and instead, taken into custody. The stories of both Brook and Evan really opened my eyes to how much race truly affects those in recovery, and those struggling with an addiction.
