It is never a fun event when listening to a discussion by someone who has lost a child in any way. Losing a son who struggled with his addiction may be even harder to talk about. I found Jon Orens’ presentation to be eye-opening into his struggle, along with the 11-year battle his son was going through.
I found his story particularly interesting, especially when he discussed the amount of money he spent on Daniel’s recovery and his trouble with the police. Especially when Jon discussed that he had to pay close to $20,000 to get his son out of Camden County prison.
In my criminal behavior class, we have discussed how certain events not only affect the primary victim, in this case, Daniel, but also the secondary people, in this case, it is Jon, and his ex-wife. I think his story is a good example of how addiction affects a whole family, and beyond.
